Winter holidays: what can Khabarovsk Krai offer tourists?

Khabarovsk Krai has extensive tourism potential not only in summer but also in winter. Thus, the region has ski resorts, recreation centers and glamping sites, the beautiful Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve, as well as numerous interesting sites located in the city of Khabarovsk itself.

The other day, a film crew from the Rossiya 24 TV channel visited the Khabarovsk Territory, visited local tourist sites and released a short film called “Edge of Attraction”, which tells about where you can relax in the Khabarovsk Territory during the winter. In particular, journalists visited the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve, where they rode quad bikes through the snowy Ussuri taiga.

— The geography of tourists coming to us is very extensive. Tourists come to us both from China and from various Russian cities — Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novgorod, Ryazan, as well as from nearby Far Eastern cities. They come to us to relax in the forest. This year we have already had about 3,100 tourists. We plan to increase this figure by at least 10% next year. Or maybe more, that’s how it goes,” said Roman Anikin, the organizer of quad biking tours through the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve.

There, next to the reserve, is the Khetsir ski resort, which has been undergoing large-scale reconstruction for several years. It should be fully completed by 2028, but its first phase will open in the coming days. And not far from the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, there is an even larger Kholdomi ski resort, which covers an area of almost 250 hectares and has the only 2,500 meter-long heated cable car in our country. And the total length of its routes is 25 kilometers. And for beginners who want to learn how to ski or snowboard, in the northern suburbs of Khabarovsk, there is the Snowman ski resort, which has two small slopes 500 and 200 meters long.

— Tourists come to us mainly from Khabarovsk, as our base is located 20 kilometers from the city center. Since 2019, our tourist flow has almost doubled, from 16,000 to 30,000 people. And this became possible due to the construction of a road to our base,” said Elena Moroz, administrator of the Voronezh Eco-Park.

Glampings are also constantly appearing in the Khabarovsk Territory. So, if in 2021 there were only five of them, now they are already 13, and next year their number will grow to 16. Locals and visiting tourists book their houses for weekends six months in advance.

— We have a lot of plots with an area of 12 acres. In total, this is about 1.5 hectares. Currently, we have built houses on only four sites, but we plan to build another line of houses and then move even further into the forest. There is a demand for this, and people are asking us to have more houses, including bigger houses. But we still focus on family people who come to us to relax in peace and comfort,” said Sergey Tretyakov, owner of the Tretyakovo Pole recreation center.

However, in order to have a good rest in the Khabarovsk Territory in winter, tourists do not even need to travel outside the regional capital. Thus, in the very center of Khabarovsk, in the park area of the Lenin Stadium, there is an outdoor swimming pool. You can comfortably swim in the open air in it in any frost. The frost outside is -30 degrees, and the water temperature in the pool is +30 degrees, plus warm steam is swirling above the water, which prevents swimmers from freezing. In 2015, this pool came under the control of a private investor who invested in its reconstruction and maintains it.

— On average, up to 500 people visit our pool per day. But now, in winter, much less. People come to us even from the central part of Russia, but mainly from Far Eastern cities. First of all, from Vladivostok, whose residents like to come to us for weekends, and their trip to Khabarovsk definitely includes a visit to the outdoor pool,” said Sergey Donskikh, investor and president of the regional swimming federation.

And next to the outdoor pool, there is the largest free outdoor ice rink in the Far East, with an area of almost 7,000 square meters. It has been flooded in the park area of the Lenin Stadium since 2015, and since then it has been one of the main winter entertainment venues for residents and visitors to Khabarovsk. It is especially popular during the New Year holidays.

— We have a Baby Ice Rink for those who have just recently skated and are taking their first steps on the ice, and we also have a separate area for ice hockey and bandy. Both professionals and amateurs play there. Over 50,000 people visit our skating rink during the winter, and more than 2,500 people are present here at the same time during the New Year holidays,” said Yulia Chernikova, Head of the Social Programs Implementation Department of the Khabarovsk Territory Sports Facilities Directorate.

In addition, in winter, in Khabarovsk, you can play football and hockey in felt boots in the cold, buy souvenirs with the symbols and aroma of the region, and visit the central Lenin Square during the New Year holidays, where the New Year’s town is located and the AmurFest festival and fair takes place. There you can ride down the slides, take pictures against the background of ice and snow sculptures, look at Christmas trees and even go for a ride on the ice rink. You can also find a white-blue-green whale there, one of the symbols of the Khabarovsk Territory. In addition, large New Year towns are located in the Dynamo, Gagarin and Gaidar parks, near the Ecodom shopping center, the Khabarovsk cinema, the KhRefinery House of Culture, the Rus Cultural Center, near school No. 23 and elsewhere.

It should be noted that a large-scale reboot of the tourism industry in Khabarovsk Krai began in 2022, and its development strategy is designed until 2026. It should be noted that in order to develop tourism infrastructure, the regional authorities reimburse local businesses up to 85% of their costs incurred for these purposes. Moreover, the amount of the subsidy allocated for these purposes from the regional budget this year has increased from 6 to 20 million rubles.

— Over the past three years, we have attracted 1.3 billion rubles from the federal budget. Overall, the turnover of our entire hospitality industry this year will exceed 4 billion rubles. This is a third more than last year. In addition, more than 1 million tourists visited our region this year. This is a big increase,” said Mikhail Degtyarev, Governor of the Khabarovsk Territory.

As for federal support, in 2024, the regions will receive a single subsidy totaling 6.2 billion rubles. Of this amount, Khabarovsk Krai should receive 73.2 million rubles. This money will be used to implement major tourism projects, including the construction of the longest river embankment in the Far East, which will stretch in Khabarovsk along the Amur River and will become another attraction for tourists coming to the “homeland of whales and airplanes”.
