Eating nuts reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of impaired carbohydrate metabolism, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. It is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases.

According to WHO, metabolic syndrome has become a new health threat in the modern world: the overall prevalence in the US alone has increased to 21.3% among young people aged 20-36 over the past five years.

Participants in the experiment ate either 30 grams of unsweetened nuts twice a day or the same portion of a carbohydrate-rich snack. Both snacks contained the same amount of calories, protein, fiber, and sodium.

Women who ate nuts had reduced waist circumference and slowed down visceral fat formation. In men from the “nut” group of participants in the experiment, insulin levels in the blood decreased. Lipid levels also improved for both sexes.
